A breakfast celebration was held on 22 February 2013 at BP Australia’s head office at Docklands Melbourne, with a large audience of 80 guests gathered to celebrate Project New Dawn (PND) successes, recognising sponsors and volunteers who have made PND a success. To put it simply, without the support of The Salvation Army, BP, Radio Rentals and numerous volunteers, PND would have remained a dream, an idea – instead it has helped over 40 homeless participants since 2007, assisting them to experience positive life changes.
Organisers also achieved another objective, raising the awareness of PND in the wider corporate community, and presenting a challenge to other organisations and supporters to come on board PND to play a part to resolve the homelessness problem. In attendance included senior representatives from KPMG, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, the Toll Group, Kwan Group, The Australian Post and CPA, private Australian businesses like Jasbe and Rampage Petroleum.
Guests heard about the genesis of PND, with Major Brendan Nottle (co-founder of PND) describing PND as a grass roots project that goes beyond “ticking the box” on CSR KPIs, instead, it is a programme that makes tangible difference to the homeless, providing them with pathways to break out of their current state of maginalisation.
President of BP Australiasia, Paul Waterman spoke of his pride in his staff, for their progressive thinking, their passion and for playing such a critical part in helping the homeless in a truly meaningful way.
Ex-Participant Trevor Wolfe spoke of the time when he was destitute, and yet the Salvos gave him an opportunity that eventually allowed him to breakaway from homelessness, and eventually reuniting with his estranged family.
Julie Gibson (PND Steering Committee Member) interviewed Danielle Weglowski, the “force” behind PND’s expansion to Brisbane. Danielle described PND as “a hand up, not a hand out” – she simply could not be more succinct in describing what PND is about.
Rebecca McGrath (PND Steering Committee Member) closed the morning presenting a challenge to the audience, asking them to think about how they play a part in assisting PND.
The Project New Dawn team would like to thank BP for hosting the breakfast celebration, Wellcom, Stream Solutions, Mr Donut, Mocopan, ACF, Balfour, Source Foods, Bunch Group and Microhire for their support of the event.
